Raising my family in Santa Cruz has made me fall even more in love with the holidays. Over the years, we’ve explored every festive event and hidden gem where the magic truly comes alive. Now I’m sharing them with you—so you can enjoy an easy, magical Christmas in this beautiful town too. Here is what you didn’t miss:

Top things to do during Christmas in Santa Cruz – Felton, Scott Valley, and Boulder Creek areas

Roaring Camp Holiday Tree Walk

For exact dates check click here

Where: Roaring Camp Railroads, 5401 Graham Hill Road, Felton, CA 95018

Honestly, if you’re looking for something that feels truly magical this Christmas season, you have to try the Holiday Tree Walk at Roaring Camp. It’s one of those things that feels special every single year.

You hop on the old-fashioned Redwood Forest Steam Train and ride through the quiet, wintry redwoods—everything smells like pine and it instantly puts you in a holiday mood. When you get up to Bear Mountain, they’ve decorated the trees, and it feels like you stepped into your own Christmas movie.

The kids get so excited sipping warm cider and spotting Santa (yes, he’s there!), and back in town they always have cute holiday activities to keep everyone happy. It’s honestly one of the easiest ways to make a full day feel festive without a big plan—just show up, ride the train, and let the Christmas magic do its thing.

Boulder Creek Tree Lighting and Santa Comes to town

December 2 @ 2:00 pm – 6:00 pm exact time check in here

Where: Forest Street, Downtown Bolder creek

If you want something that feels super cozy and small-town charming for the holidays, the Boulder Creek Tree Lighting is such a good pick. It’s one of those events that makes you slow down and actually feel the season. The whole town gathers as they light up the big tree, and it instantly feels magical. Kids love it because Santa literally arrives in town—usually with music, lights, and that extra bit of excitement only a small community can pull off.

It’s simple, festive, and totally worth it if you want an easy holiday outing that doesn’t require much planning. Just bundle up, grab some hot cocoa, and enjoy that classic Christmas-in-the-mountains feeling.

Wilder Ranch Victorian Holiday in the Ranch

December 13 : check times here

If you’re in the mood for something totally different this Christmas season, the Victorian Holiday at Wilder Ranch is such a fun way to step back in time. The whole place transforms into a little 1800s holiday village—you’ll hear the Lyric Victorian Carolers singing, smell treats baking from old Victorian recipes, and see artisans working in the blacksmith and machine shop like you’re walking through history. The kids love exploring the historic homes and getting hands-on making wreaths, candles, and even goodies baked right in the wood oven.

What I love most is that it feels relaxed, charming, and surprisingly magical without spending a lot—because the event itself is totally free. You just pay the $10 vehicle day-use fee to enter the park. It’s one of those holiday outings that feels wholesome, easy, and truly special, especially if you want something a little quieter than the big holiday crowds.

Santa Cruz Civic Center: The Nutcracker with a Live Orchestra

December 9 – 10 2023 at 4:30pm and 6:00 pm

If you’re looking for a holiday tradition that truly feels magical, the Santa Cruz Ballet Theatre’s 21st annual production of “The Nutcracker” is an absolute must. The show takes place at the Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium with a live orchestra, and Music Director Pamela Martin leads 52 professional musicians to bring Tchaikovsky’s beloved score to life. Watching the talented local dancers, including SCBT’s pre-professional Company, alongside guest stars and alumni like Melody Mennite from Houston Ballet and Lucien Postlewaite from Pacific Northwest Ballet, is simply breathtaking.

Farley’s Christmas

It runs from the day after Thanksgiving, Friday, November 29, 2025, through New Year’s Eve from 5:30 PM to 8:30 PM

Where: 108 Seaview Ave in Santa Cruz

If you want a holiday outing that really makes you feel the Christmas spirit, you have to check out Farley’s Christmas. This is one of those family-friendly spots that just feels magical—you can even get a classic Christmas picture before it aired on ABC, which is such a fun bonus. Every time I go, it really puts me in the holiday mood, and I promise the kids will love it too.

The display is full of traditional Christmas magic with dozens of Christmas trees, garlands, sleighs, an elf village, miniature villages, and a cozy log cabin that Santa even uses for rest stops. On special nights, there’s a fairy grotto complete with waterfalls and twinkling fairies, and yes—it even snows! It’s a walk-through exhibit, so you can take your time—sit on a bench in the Fairy Garden listening to the waterfall, or rock in the log cabin chairs by the fireplace. Tickets are free, but donations are welcome since it takes a lot of work to keep everything looking this magical. It’s simple, cozy, and one of the best ways to make the season feel extra special without a ton of planning.

Santa Cruz Lighted Boat Parade

Saturday, December 6, 2025

This is one of my favorite event in town. It is cold every cold so be ready with warm clothes and hot coco. IIf you want a truly magical and unique way to celebrate the holidays, you’ve got to check out the Santa Cruz Lighted Boat Parade at the harbor. This annual event, sponsored by the Santa Cruz Yacht Club, features about 50 beautifully decorated power and sailboats circling the South Harbor shortly after sunset, around 5:30 PM. The parade is a family favorite, and it’s for a good cause too—there’s a canned food drive benefiting Second Harvest Food Bank.

This year’s theme is Disco in the North Pole, so expect extra sparkle, fun, and holiday cheer as you watch the boats glide by. You can even book a charter boat to get right in the middle of the action, or enjoy hot drinks and snacks available at various spots around the South Harbor. Plan ahead for parking and finding a good viewing spot—the parade takes place between the Murray Street bridge and the gas dock, and while the lighthouse offers gorgeous views of Monterey Bay, it’s not the best place to watch the parade. Great spots include the Murray Street bridge, East Harbor launch ramp, or along the harbor paths. It’s a festive, cozy way to spend an evening with family, see amazing lights reflecting on the water, and soak in a one-of-a-kind Santa Cruz holiday tradition.

Santa Cruz VW Christmas Lights Cruise 🎄🚐

One of the most charming holiday traditions in Santa Cruz is the VW Christmas Lights Cruise, where vintage Volkswagen lovers gather to roll through town in a festive parade of twinkling lights and holiday cheer. If you’ve never seen a line of classic VW bugs and buses decked out in full Christmas sparkle, it’s truly a sight that makes the whole community smile.

This year’s cruise will take place on December 21, 2025. The group will meet at 2802 Mission St. in Santa Cruz at 3:00 PM, and the cruise will officially roll out at 4:30 PM. Families line the sidewalks, kids wave at the cars, and the vibe feels like a moving holiday block party.

If you want to join in or learn more, all details are shared by the VW Käfers Club of Watsonville, the organizers keeping this beloved local tradition alive. Whether you’re participating with your own VW or simply watching from the streets, it’s one of the most joyful holiday moments in Santa Cruz.

If you want a holiday tradition that’s totally unique and worth experiencing, you have to check out Surfing Santa in Capitola. The event is set up at Capitola Village and is super exciting for kids and adults alike. The line to talk to Santa is free, so get there a little early if you want your kids to meet him. Watching Santa arrive on the waves (or paddle in when the tide is tricky) and seeing everyone cheer along is a simple, joyful, and totally memorable way to kick off the holiday season. So glad this fun tradition keeps going. It is super exciting for the kids and everyone!
