We live about 5-6 hours from Lake Tahoe, and we’ve tried different ski resorts in different years with our beginner kids, including me as Adult beginner. Here is the list I put together including a comparative of prices and benefits for each resort. To make it easier for you to plan your trip, I’ve compiled a list of the best ski resorts based on prices, benefits, and more. Read on to find out which resort fits your family’s needs and budget. All of these destinations are family friendly and a guaranteed great time.

I am myself a beginner and my kids are more advanced now, maybe what would be called “intermediate.” So here is the list of the best choices for a first family trip to the snow in California with beginner-level skiers and snowboarders. So grab your gear and let’s hit the slopes!

How to get to Lake Tahoe:
Driving: These resorts are just 3.5 hours from San Francisco (assuming the traffic and weather cooperate) – see the maps below. Make sure to leave early on winter weekends because everyone can have the same idea of heading the slopes.
3 hr 24 min (196.3 mi) via I-80 E
Flying: If you need to fly to get to Lake Tahoe, the Reno Tahoe International Airport is closest since it is around 50 minutes from the lake. Another option is the Sacramento International airport, located about 2 hours away. Two hours sounds like a ways away, but it’s still closer than your other choice, the San Francisco and Oakland International airports are located about 3 hours away.
The main highway to Lake Tahoe is kept snow free. You can even take a shuttle for a short ride from the village to the SnoVentures activity zone across the parking lot. Guests staying at the Resort can take a free shuttle between the hotel and the village at Olympic Valley.
Tahoe has the Mountaineer shuttle service – SATC is a free service between Palisades and Alpine Meadow for guests and residents. In addition, you may think about using the free Tahoe Truckee area regional transit (TART) that offer buses and shuttles in North Lake Tahoe – check it out here.
Palisades Tahoe Ski Resort for Beginners

We love the former Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows have unified as Palisades Tahoe, the largest ski resort in North America. Although is know as for experts there are plenty of areas for beginners. For beginner This resort is on the upper level price of resort and It has an easily accessible location and incomparable beginner trails. It is a go-to destination for new skiers because its variety of runs, from bunny hills to mellow groomers, is the perfect spot to perfect the basics and gain confidence on the snow. Plus, with spectacular views of Lake Tahoe, it’s an unforgettable experience!However as beginner you wont be able to see it . It has variety of runs – With over 1,000 acres of terrain and 30 named trails, Palisades Tahoe provides plenty of options for all levels and abilities.
Here, you’ll find 3600 acres of terrain, 29 lifts, the iconic Aerial Tram, and the Funitel—a spacious lift with room for all.
However, don’t be overwhelmed, there are plenty of things to do for beginners. Besides that you can take classes for skiing, snowboarding or even enjoy the Aerial Tam to the mountain top overlook, or just go disco tubing under lights. That I haven’t done it but it sounds so much fun.
Things you need to know about Palisades Tahoe ski resort for beginners:
Beginners can take advantage of the family-friendly runs in the valley, as well as the “bunny hills” at the bottom for practice and ski school classes. For the more adventurous, the First Ventures beginner lift is conveniently located right by the SnoVentures tubing area.
You can purchase one lift ticket to experience both resorts, as Alpine Meadows and Olympic Valley are connected by a seven-mile drive and a gondola. Explore 4,000 acres of skiable terrain and get the most out of your ski trip!
Beginners check list Palisades:
Tickets : You can try one day lesson to learn but went you choose more days in a road you can reach your goal faster. If you want to save money while enjoying the slopes, you’ll want to buy your lift tickets in advance online. With the Tahoe Super 4 Pack, you can ski for four days this season for less than $125 a day! Plus, the tickets are multi-way and come with no blackout dates, so you can use them in either resort and keep coming back until all four tickets have been used.
Reserve Lessons: Booking your ski and snowboarding lessons in advance is a great way to save hassle and maximize your chances of getting a spot on a good snow day. Classes fill up quickly, so reserving your spot beforehand is a must. Plus, California’s weather can be unpredictable. You don’t want to miss out on a perfect powder day or even a few hours of sunshine and mush!
Take advantage of ski resort deals and packages – often you can get the fifth lesson free if you book four in advance. Half-day Learn to Ride or Learn to Ski packages also typically include a lift ticket and rental equipment. If you’re there for the whole day, you can also get lunch as part of the package. Helmets and boots are included when you book a multi-day lesson, and you can even rent the equipment overnight to save you time in the morning. Make sure to purchase lift tickets and rental equipment with your lesson to guarantee your access to the mountain.
Rentals: If you don’t take lessons, don’t forget you’ll probably still need to rent your equipment. You can rent there or there are ski rental shops in nearby towns, you can pick gear up along the way to the snow but make sure to find the right pickup locations. We usually rent equipment back home and save around half of the price!
Parking: Make the most of your ski trip by taking advantage of the free parking offered at both resorts. Olympic Valley offers 800 spaces, with carpool spots available, but you’ll want to arrive early to be sure to find a spot close to the action. Don’t worry if you can’t find a parking spot – resort shuttles are always available to get you around.

If you’re planning a day of skiing at both resorts, plan ahead and take advantage of the shuttles offered so you don’t waste precious time traveling between them. The shuttle runs every 5 to 10 minutes and takes about 15 minutes, so you can easily get from one resort to the other without missing out on ski time. You’ll find different parking lots and amenities at each resort, so make sure to explore them all. That way, you can make the most out of your skiing experience without sacrificing time.
After a few hours of practice, beginner skiers can take their first run in their comfort zone. From easy blue and green runs at the top of the mountain to later intermediate and expert runs at Shirley Lake and Gold Coast. Olympic Valley even has its own mountaintop beginner area, where you can take in the spectacular view of the lake.
The Village

There are plenty of things to do at the resort after skiing. Olympic Village has so many activities during the winter and all year long. You can find an ice skating rink, and Snow Ventures offers mini snowmobiles you can rent and tubing. Also there are dog sleds and cross country skiing as an option.
Alpine Meadow in Palisades Tahoe for beginners

❄️25% of the trails are for beginners. With slopes tailored to them, they won’t have to worry about being intimidated by faster skiers.
Alpine Meadows is the other resort in Paladise Tahoe. It has 13 lifts and 2,400 acres for all ski levels. You may prefer this because it is not as crowded as Olympic valley and this resort has a breathtaking view of the beautiful Sierra Nevada and also Lake Tahoe.
A couple of chairs near the base area are for beginners. They service essentially flat terrain appropriate for absolute rank starters. The Subway chair is the first stop, with the longer Meadow chair seen to be the next progression. For beginners skiers and snowboarders, the resort offers some perfect introductory terrain. With two easy green trails, true beginners can learn the basics of skiing or snowboarding without feeling overwhelmed. More advanced beginners will find a few blue trails that are actually more suitable to their level, although the trails can be tricky to identify and it may be wise to ski with an instructor to help you make the most out of your experience.
Alpine Meadows is more challenging for beginners than Olympic Village. It often takes a bit of work, and the snow takes longer to ski out. Alpine also is a better option for intermediate/groomed skiing and side country terrain.
Alpine Meadows for beginners Things you need to Know
The lodge at Alpine Meadows The Olympic Village has the village and Alpine meadow has the lodge! A beautiful renovated lodge located at the base. It’s super cozy and beautiful, where you can grab coffee or hot chocolate with a family friendly ambiance with the lifts close by.
The beginner chairs at this resort are at the bottom. The beginner area is easy to access from the base. This resort has over 100 trails but you’ll find beginner friendly slopes no problem. The best areas for beginners here are accessible from the base area just look for the “magic carpet.” The beginner areas are off the Hot Wheels Chair, Subway Chair, and Hot wheels chair.
For intermediate and advanced skiers, they have the Lakeview Chair and and Sherwood Express. For Intermediate skiers who try Alpine Meadows find that it has fabulous intermediate runs with a little more elbow room. It’s perfect for skiers and snowboarders who are ready to take the next step on blue runs. All the advanced runs are well marked so everyone can safely and comfortably ski to their level. There is a Treeline Cirque chair at the mountain’s base has a mid-mountain unload station that takes intermediate and advance skiers to the top. Parking Alpine Meadow has 75 premium spots at $30
Alpine Meadows has events all year long. There’s also a Retro Après party, and live music that brings so much energy to the mountains.
Where to eat: Alpine Meadows has a chalet and a cabin near Scott Chair where you can grab delicious snacks or warm up after and before with hot cocoa by a fireplace. At the base of Sherwood Chair you have the Ice bar for snacks and beverages from a ski-up window, and at the base of subway chair you have the Mogrog Cafe that offers European food style.
At the Lodge you’ll find the Last Chair Bar & Restaurant that is new and open on weekends and holidays. It’s a great place to grab beer or wine once the lifts have closed. It’s a casual California restaurant with a variety of après favorites.
Differences between Olympic Valley and Alpine Meadow that beginners need to know
Olympic Valley Has a dedicated beginner area, uniquely situated at the top and has unrivaled views. It has Belmont Terrain Park: beginner and progression park. This is the perfect place to start learning the basics and has good backcountry access with the convenience of a chair lift. For expert and intermedium this area has exposed boulders and cliff. Intermediates can test their skills on some of the longer runs and “easier” blacks
It has 5 terrain parks. In the Gold Coast Terrain Park, you’ll find cool features including a half-pipe. Olympic Valley has an uphill capacity of 53,500 people per hour! In comparison, Alpine Meadows has an uphill capacity of 18,700 per hour.
Alpine Meadows The Alpine Meadow Resort offers a limited-crowd experience, especially weekends and peak times. Perfect for kids, there’s just one terrain park to ski around. Take a ride on the Sherwood Chair Lift, which delivers unmissable views of the lake, plus open bowl skiing. Whether you’re an intermediate or an advanced skier, the resort’s ski zones have something for everyone. And if you’re an experienced skier, try your hand at deep snow in the Sun Bowl, S.P. Bowl, and Grouse Saddle. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can even hike to get to different spots! Plus, with its great layout, you won’t have to worry about getting lost in the expert terrain.
Information for beginner about Ski & Snowboard School lessons in Palisades
They offer Child private lesson for kids aged 3-13 prices vary depend on the time of the day and weekend. Check here for more details. Also they have adult and family private lessons fro kids 7 and up. You can get good disounts for ski and snowboard rental when you book classes. Check here. Equipment rental and lift tickets are required but not included with private lessons. It doesn’t include lunch, but at least it is a full lesson. The price varies according to the time of the day, age and day of the week as well as the package you choose. The lift is free for kids 4 and under.

Heavenly has the Tamarack Lodge at Heavenly it is located at the top of the Gondola, this LEED certified lodge features grab-n-go snacks, food & beverages.
Maggie’s: One of the longer green runs at Heavenly, Maggie’s is accessed via the Aerial Tramway and Powderbowl Express lift. From the chair, you’ll have incredible views of Lake Tahoe behind you and see more advanced skiers and riders run the routes below the lift. At the top, head left to take Maggie’s run around the outskirts of the Powderbowl region.
Enchanted Forest: You get here via the First Ride chair. The Enchanted Forest and Poma Trail runs are really perfect for beginners. There’s so much to love about this area, like it’s a designated learning zone so other skiers know they should be cautious and look out for newbies. The Enchanted Forest offers broad, easy slopes and quick access to the California Lodge, where you can go to refuel with coffee, hot chocolate, and snacks.
Anything near the village is easily accessible, and you can take the gondola up to access the ski areas (and back down at the end of the day). It comes down to your budget! Many hotels have shuttles. Among other hotels to stay are Marriott Grand Residence Club at the base of the gondola, as well as the Holiday Inn Club Vacations Tahoe Ridge Resort, Lakeland Village, and the Zalanta hotel.
The downside of Heavenly it is expensive, can be crowded, and may be hard to find parking. However, Heavenly has the biggest beginner area along with a tubing and adventure park. The beginner area is great and located by California and Boulder lodges. The Big Easy chairlift takes you to a great wide open slope perfect for those who are just starting out.
This mountain has 20% of the area for new skiers and in the California side you find beginner trails. It also offers full-day family private lessons for up to six and a village at the base of the Gondola. Heavenly also as a hybrid ski school/daycare for preschoolers who are ready to ski but not for a full day. The program for 3-4 year olds includes one hour of skiing, and the program for 4-5 year olds is a half-and-half experience.

Other activities is taking the scenic gondola ride : Heavenly has a unique gondola ride with an amazing view of the lake. If you aren’t skiing or riding, or you can just stay for this. Get on the Gondola and enjoy the 2.4 mile ride with breathtaking views. Stop at the Observation Deck for panoramic vistas of Lake Tahoe and the surrounding Sierra Nevada mountains. Open dayly 9:30am – 5:00pm. Prices ho from $47 and up and kids 4 and under are free.

North Star Ski Resort

This is another resort for family-fun and beginner-friendly activities . This alpine village resort is located between the most beautiful alpine lake in Lake Tahoe. Despite its high price tag, North Star offers 3,170 acres of terrain with 100 trails, 13% of which are classified as beginner-level. Plus, its lower elevation provides a warmer climate.
This resort combines a luxury atmosphere with an alpine village. It’s located between one of the most beautiful alpine lakes it has some lake views and great upscale shops.
North Star for beginners things you need to know:
Northstar has the perfect terrain for novice skiers and snowboarders. Its bunny slopes are great for those who have graduated from the basics, while its wide runs are perfect for beginners transitioning to intermediate. What sets Northstar apart is its mild slopes, providing a gentler rise than many other mountains.
To get the skiing and snowboarding adventure started, make your way to the base area via the Big Springs Express Gondola or Village Express four-person chairlift. From there, ski or board your way down the Village Run trail for an unforgettable journey back to the village.
For those seeking more of a challenge, Northstar’s blues runs are equivalent to other mountains’ greens runs, and its blacks runs equal other mountains blues. To put it simply, Green = Easy, Blue = Intermediate, and Black = Expert. Make your way to Northstar and challenge yourself on the slopes with confidence!
Those starting out on their snowboarding or skiing adventure can head up the Big Easy four-person chairlift to the Burton Snowboard Academy and Northstar Ski and Ride School. The Burton Snowboard Academy has a personalized, progressive teaching method that helps newbies learn the basics and improve gradually.
Once they’ve mastered the basics, they can soak up the stunning views of Lake Tahoe from the Vista Express four-person chairlift, before heading to the ‘green run’ Ski Trail and Lumberjack — ideal for slower skiing. With enough practice, they can then move on to the blue runs. This typically takes several days, but those who want to learn more quickly can progress faster.
Beginners need to head to Lower Lion’s Way via the Big Easy chairlift at the ski school’s home base. Skid Trail to Lumberjack is another perfect green run – access it via the Vista Express chairlift. More experienced travelers can take advantage of Village Run, an action-packed downhill experience from the resort village.
Don’t forget to book lessons in advance for a discounted rate and more availability. Northstar offers private lessons, adults group lessons, and kids group lessons, all with different prices depending on the time of day, age, number of people, and length of class.
Keep in mind that Northstar can get very crowded, with chair lift wait times of up to 30-45 minutes on busy days. Plan ahead and enjoy your time on the slopes!

Kirkwood Ski Resort

Kirkwood Mountain is another fun ski resort located along the Sierra crest in the El Dorado National forest South of Lake Tahoe in California near the beautiful Sierra Nevada. It’s a full two hours from Sacramento, and because it is farther from the north side and doesn’t get the crowds like some of there others, making it a favorite of locals for the laid back atmosphere.
Kirkwood has about 2,300 acres with about 12% of the terrain designated for beginners and 15 lifts with 80+ trails. People can spend time at the village and its restaurants and shops containing ski-in, ski-out accommodations with adjacent shops and restaurants. The resort also plays host to other activities, including cross country skiing, snowshoeing, dog sled tours and backcountry access.
This place is fun for all levels but definitely makes a great family getaway fro adventure seekers. Thankfully, it survived the latest round of catastrophic fires. It is is one of the region’s larger resorts and has a great view of the mountains surrounding it. It is well known for receiving a great amount of snowfall and the resort called it the K-factor due to the fact that winter storms generate great conditions.
Kirkwood for beginners things you need to know:
Timber Creek at Kirkwood is the perfect place for skiers and snowboarders of all levels to learn and enjoy the slopes. From kids to adults, beginner to experienced, lift tickets run from $94 for kids and $129 for adults. If you need lesson, they must be reserved in advance and rental equipment is not included. Private and group lessons for adults or kids are available for either a full- or half-day and packages are available with rental and lift ticket included. Sierra at Tahoe Resort for Beginners

Sierra at Tahoe is a nice area but much smaller than Heavenly or Kirkwood. It’s very popular with snowboarders though. I would recommend skiing at least 2 days at Sierra at Tahoe. It definitely it has the best prices for this size of mountain.
It has the Easy Rider Express 4-person chairlift next to the Base Lodge leads to a very wide and easy slope that is suitable for beginners. Several moving carpets are available here too. There are also easy slopes from Huckleberry Mountain to the base station. These slopes are marked specially for beginners and fast skiing is not allowed.
With no village and no on-mountain accommodation, Sierra Tahoe offers an easy-going environment that sets it apart from other high-end resorts in the area. Plus, families looking for an affordable ski holiday will love the family-friendly atmosphere. Lift tickets are $126 per adult to $92 for kids.
Sierra at Tahoe is the perfect spot for first-timers and families looking to hit the slopes. With its laidback atmosphere and relatively low cost compared to Lake Tahoe’s big boys, it’s no wonder this ski resort has gained such popularity. From tree skiing to pillow skiing, Sierra at Tahoe has something for all types of skiers.
Beginners have lots of options too, with a dedicated learners area near the main base lodge, multiple magic carpets and serviced green trails. Plus, even some of the trails touted as “advanced” are great for intermediates. Enjoy the thrill of skiing Sierra at Tahoe for a fraction of the cost!
Sugar Bowl
📍629 Sugar Bowl Rd. Norden, CA 95724
This is one of our favorite resort because it is easy to access from highway. An easy drive from the Bay Area and just less than two hours northeast of Sacramento. And specially small and more affordable price. It has an off-the-grid feel that you can’t beat and easy to access from Interstate 80. It’s surrounded by snowy forests rather than condos, casinos and hotels. It has 12 lifts that including one gondola.
It has 17% of the trails dedicated to beginners located just between the day parking lot and Judah Lodge is perfect for learning in a sunny and peaceful setting. For those wanting to practice more challenging tricks, look out for the learners’ area at Nob Hill, perched just above the Village Lodge.
